When students go back to school for sport and exercise sciences, most programs are focused on theory and fail to emphasize real-world application. This type of education leaves students without an ability to translate their knowledge to training and work directly with clients. Many students lack a job once they graduate.

Each of our courses have been developed to be delivered LIVE over two weekends, consisting of 30-40 hours of content. Whilst completed online, courses are interactive and require attendance and as such are not self-paced online courses. The courses include breakout group sessions that require participation for the successful completion of courses within the timeframe.
Once you register for an IFI course, you will immediately be sent registration details to gain access to Canvas, and view all of the course content and resources ahead of time. You will be sent a link to your built-in calendar with all of your live lectures, labs, and assignment due dates. Your teaching assistant will reach out to you.

The IFI Health and Fitness Professional Level 1 course is designed for accredited fitness industry professionals and university graduates with an interest in the theoretical and practical application of exercise and behaviour change with a results-based philosophy for long-term health, wellness and fitness outcomes for non-clinical populations. The 32-hour course includes a unique blend of theoretical course delivery meshed with interactive tutorials, group discussions and interactive practical experiences. This unique course places a strong emphasis on practical skill development in an applied learning environment to create xAlt Certified Trainers/Coaches equipped to commence work upon successful completion of the course.

By the end of one course, you’ll have gone through 30 – 40 hours of content. To obtain certification, full attendance and completion of course content is required. You will immediately receive an electronic certification, as well as a hard copy mailed to you.
As soon as you receive your electronic certification you are ready to take your new knowledge and change your client’s lives, on your own, or on xAlt.

Professor, PhD Exercise and Sport Sciences/Physiotherapy – President of IFI
Chris McLellan is the Head of the School of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, with more than 17 years of experience in academia. He is internationally recognized for his work in applied athlete preparation, performance analysis, adaptation to exercise, and recovery. With +100 peer-reviewed published work and +75 peer-reviewed journal publications, Chris is an expert in researching, consolidating, and delivering health and fitness information. At IFI, Chris McLellan designs course curriculums and teaches content to IFI students.
M.D. Sports Medicine – Head of Behavioural Science
Dr. Khan is an expert and leader in musculoskeletal and regenerative medicine. He treats many of the world’s best athletes, from champion weightlifters to Olympic gold medalists. Dr. Khan is one of very few physicians in Canada that holds a membership with the Spine Intervention Society. He also teaches medical students and residents and is an adjunct clinical professor at McMaster University. Dr. Khan is also a certified personal trainer, making him an expert in the application of evidence-based research into practice. Combining his passions for health, fitness, and medicine, Dr. Khan’s mission is to deliver universal access to science-based, high-quality health and fitness knowledge to the students of IFI.

PhD, Exercise Physiology – Advisor: Cardiorespiratory Fitness
Dr. Louise de Lannoy completed her PhD at Queen’s University in 2019 in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, where she examined the importance and feasibility of cardiorespiratory fitness as a clinical risk factor. Her interests in converting knowledge to practice led her to joining the IFI team and work towards educating students to actually measuring their client’s cardiorespiratory fitness to improve their long-term health outcomes. Outside of her work, Louise enjoys exploring Ottawa by running/cycling/skiing through it and winding down at the end of the day on the couch with a glass of wine, her partner Jeff, and their puppy.
PhD Exercise Physiology and Nutrition, CSCS, RSCC*E, AEP, AES, RNutr, ASCA-L3, PCAS-P – Advisor
Dr. Stephen Bird is a world leading athletic performance influencer, leading the integration of performance science for sport’s elite.
He has worked with professional sports teams and international sporting organizations attending major events, including Olympic Games (2008 Beijing and 2016 Rio), Commonwealth (Basketball Scotland), Rugby League World Cup (Scotland Rugby League), and UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and World Championships (Australia and Indonesia national teams).
Stephen has worked with teams in the National Rugby League, National Basketball League and Women’s National Basketball League, along with high performance coaching and athlete development roles for PNG Sports Foundation, Basketball NSW and Basketball WA.
Known as the Coach of Coaches, Stephen’s work in elite sports conditioning, athlete recovery and performance optimization bridges the knowledge gap between theory, science and applied training for coaches and athletes. Stephen’s knowledge and experiences are an asset to IFI’s curriculum delivery. He aids in optimizing trainer potential to improve the health outcomes of the general population.
MScPT – Advisor: Mobility
Keren is a registered physiotherapist whose practice focuses on treating and preventing musculoskeletal injuries that impact daily functioning and athletic performance. She empowers her patients to be actively involved in their health for effectively restoring their function and recovering. For this reason, her treatment approach focuses on guiding patients through their injuries with corrective exercise and education. Keren facilitates making movement and health accessible, effective, and safe for all clients. We leverage Keren’s passion for movement and fascination with the capabilities of the human body to aid in the development and delivery of the methodologies at IFI.
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine – Advisor: Sleep, Breathing, xAlt Pillars
Dr. Tamara Kung, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, focuses her practice on disease prevention and longevity. She primarily uses foods to help her patients achieve optimal health, with the help of good sleep and mental health. Dr. Kung loves to help patients integrate healthier habits in a step-by-step way, so that it never feels overwhelming or restrictive. At IFI, Dr. Kung educates students on the importance of proper sleep for recovery, as well as the importance of breathing on overall health and longevity.
M.Ed., Personal Trainer – Head Teaching Assistant
Hamza is an experienced personal trainer with his Masters in Education, IFI’s head educational instructor. His years of experience teaching students and clients in the industry, as well as overseeing business growth and decisions relevant to advancing personal training benefit the students at IFI. Hamza aids the rest of the leadership team in putting theory into practice. He knows how to deliver high-quality, scientific content to a diverse population of coaches in an efficient and effective manner. Hamza brings learning to life at IFI.
M.S. Sport Management, B.Kin. – Academic Coordinator
Laura Magas has her Masters of Science in Sport Management and a Bachelor’s of Kinesiology. She has an abundance of experience working in the sports, fitness, and medical industries. From dissecting human cadavers and analyzing mobility, to working alongside Dr. Adeel Khan at his practice, Laura is knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and psychology. Her business background, passion, and knowledge for movement, fitness and health, combined with her attention to detail and high organization make her an asset to the development of the International Fitness Institute. Laura is the Academic Coordinator at IFI, where she manages curriculum development, design, and implementation.
